The
International Foursquare Gospel Church was founded by the evangelist Aimee
Semple McPherson. Aimee
Elizabeth Kennedy was born in Ingersol, Ontario, Canada, on the 9th
October 1890. At the age of seventeen she accepted the Lord Jesus as her
Saviour. Later she married the evangelist Robert Semple and left with him
to China as a missionary. Her
husband caught malaria and fell terribly ill. Not long after that Aimee
was compelled to come back to the USA, widowed and with a newborn baby on
her arms. In
1917, she started travelling all over the US, carrying out many campaigns
in different cities. In 1922, during a service in Oakland, she received
the vision of the foursquare gospel, which would name to the church she
founded in January 1923, by inaugurating the Angelus Temple, in Los
Angeles, California. Aimee
passed away in September 1944. Her son, Rolf McPherson, took over the
presidency of the church, which, nowadays, is occupied by Rev. Jack
Hayford. During her ministry, Aimee not only founded the International Foursquare Gospel Church and the Angelus Temple, but she was also the one responsible for: 1 - The creation of the Life Bible College and the Tower of Prayer, in which many people would take turns of prayer of two hours each, so that there would be prayer 24 hours a day. 2 - The inauguration of the third radio station of Los Angeles, the KFSG (Call FourSquare Gospel). 3 - Founding the International Foursquare Gospel Crusade. 4 - Organizing the Department of Social Care of the Angelus Temple, which helped feeding and dressing about half a million people during the 1929 crisis and Second World War. 5 - Publishing several magazines and booklets, as well as elaborating many books, plays, Christian operas, songs (including the Foursquare Gospel Hymn) and sermons. Today,
the Foursquare Gospel Church is in 107 countries all over the world. Its
international headquarters is located in Los Angeles, California, USA.
However, it has it's own local leadership in each country, working
independently. The
Foursquare Gospel Church, based on the Bible, focuses Christ as the centre
and was one of the pioneer Pentecostal churches to bring the charismatic
revival at the beginning of the twentieth century. Preserving
its dedication on evangelising the world, it came by the will of the Holy
Spirit, and not by a division or split of churches and keeps itself united
for the glory of God. Conceived
in the heart of the Father, the foursquare gospel is a glorious message,
solid as The Rock, the same Jesus Christ in whom it is based. Its
four main themes are established in the Bible:
Jesus Christ the Savior Sent from God to save the world (Romans 3:23)
Jesus Christ the Baptiser Giving power and anointing of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5 and 8)
Jesus Christ the Healer Touching the ill with healing power (Mathew 8:17)
Jesus Christ the Coming King Coming as the King of Kings (I Thessalonians 4:16-18)
